Description

The Vito alto saxophone is a highly regarded name in the world of student and intermediate instruments, primarily known for its association with Yamaha. While Vito is a brand name for Leblanc USA, most of the popular Vito alto saxophones found today are “stencils”—instruments manufactured by other companies but labeled with the Vito brand.
Key Manufacturing Partners
The “Vito” label has been applied to saxophones from several different manufacturers over the decades, which significantly impacts their quality and value:
  • Yamaha (Japan): The most common and sought-after Vito altos (like the Vito 7131) are essentially Yamaha YAS-23 models with different engraving. These are legendary for their durability, excellent intonation, and “made in Japan” craftsmanship.
  • Beaugnier (France): Vintage Vito saxophones from the 1950s and 60s (like the Model 35) were made in France by Beaugnier. These are considered professional-level instruments with unique mechanical features, such as a semitone system.
  • KHS/Jupiter (Taiwan): Later student models (like the 7133) were manufactured by Jupiter in Taiwan. These are solid student horns but generally carry less prestige than the Japanese Yamaha-made versions.
  • Yanagisawa (Japan): The Vito VSP series are high-end intermediate or professional horns made by Yanagisawa, often recognized as some of the best stencils ever produced.
