Description
The René Dumont alto saxophone is a well-regarded “stencil” instrument, most commonly manufactured by the German firm Dörfler & Jörka (D&J). These saxophones were produced using body tubes and designs heavily influenced by—and often mistaken for—those of Julius Keilwerth.
Key Identification Features
- The Keilwerth Connection: While often called a “Keilwerth stencil,” most René Dumont saxes from the 1960s were actually made by Dörfler & Jörka, a company founded by former Keilwerth employees who used Keilwerth-style tooling.
- Design Traits: They are famous for having rolled tone holes, a feature rarely found on non-professional horns, which contributes to a “big,” resonant vintage sound.
- Aesthetics: These horns typically feature a lacquer finish with nickel-plated keys and distinctive engravings.
- Origin: They were manufactured in West Germany, primarily during the 1950s and 1960s.
Player Profile & Value
- Performance: Players often describe these saxophones as having a darker, spread sound with a stable center.
- Market Position: Originally sold as high-quality intermediate or professional-grade instruments, they are now considered “hidden gems” in the vintage market because they offer Keilwerth-like performance at a significantly lower price point.
- Serial Numbers: Common serial numbers for these D&J models range roughly between 14,000 and 16,000.
