Description

The King Super 20 alto saxophone is one of the most iconic professional jazz instruments ever produced. Manufactured by the H.N. White Company (and later UMI) between 1945 and approximately 1998, it is legendary for its powerful, “punchy” sound and was the horn of choice for jazz giants like Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley.
Key Features & Sound
  • Acoustic Character: Known for a massive, bold sound with a distinctive “American” edge. Earlier models (pre-1955) are often described as darker and richer, while later models tend to be brighter.
  • Sterling Silver Neck: A defining feature that was standard on early models; it is credited with enhancing response and clarity.
  • Silver Sonic Variant: A premium version featuring both a solid sterling silver neck and a silver bell, often with gold-plated inlay.
  • “Full Pearls”: Early high-end versions featured mother-of-pearl inlays on nearly all key touches, including side, palm, and octave keys.
  • Underslung Octave Key: A signature design element found on most Cleveland-era models, later replaced by a standard overslung mechanism in the late 1970s.
Evolution & Serial Numbers
Collectors typically divide production into two eras based on the manufacturing location:
  • Cleveland, Ohio (1945–1967): These are the most sought-after “Golden Era” horns (approx. serial #272,xxx to 426,xxx). They are prized for superior craftsmanship and character.
  • Eastlake, Ohio (1967–1998): Produced after the company was sold to Seeburg/UMI. While still professional instruments, they are generally considered to have less “soul” and are more affordable.

Condition
We rate each horn’s condition. Any defects are noted here. Each criteria is on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being poor condition and 10 being perfect

  • Body (dents, deep scratches, etc.) – 10
  • Finish (lacquer, silver plate, paint, etc.) – 8 small dent next to strap ring
  • Previous repairs (soldered posts, dent work, etc.) – 10
  • Accessories (case, mouthpiece, etc.) – 9
  • Playability (leaks, sticky keys, etc.) – 10
