Description

The

Conn “Shooting Star” tenor saxophone (officially known as the Conn Director 16M) is a well-known student-line instrument produced between 1955 and the mid-1970s. It is nicknamed for the distinctive engraving on its bell featuring three stars and a trailing “comet” tail.

Key Features and Identification
  • Official Model: Most commonly identified as the 16M (tenor) or 14M (alto).
  • Bell Engraving: Look for the signature “Shooting Star” logo on the bell.
  • Serial Number Location: Found on the back of the body near the bottom.
  • Left-Side Bell Keys: Unlike older pro models, the bell keys are both on the left side.
  • Construction Details: Features nickel-plated keys and lacks the “rolled tone holes” found on professional vintage Conns.
Era and Manufacturing Quality
The quality and value of a Shooting Star vary significantly based on where and when it was made:
  • USA Era (1955–1968): Manufactured in Elkhart, Indiana. These are generally considered the highest quality “Shooting Stars” and are often praised for having a “big, fat Conn sound” similar to the professional 10M models.
  • Mexico Era (Post-1968): Production moved to Nogales, Mexico (often called “Mexi-Conns”). These models typically have serial numbers beginning with a prefix like L, M, N, P, or R. They are often noted for having less consistent build quality and “sketchy” quality control.
