Jazz Affinity: Their broad, spread-out tonal core blends perfectly into classic jazz and blues settings.

Massive Core: Unlike the focused, laser-like projection of modern French saxophones (like Selmer), Martins fill a room with a wide wall of sound.

Acoustic Mass: This extra brass added significant weight to the body tube, directly contributing to the horn’s signature dark resonance.

If you love jazz, you’ve probably heard the warm, smooth tones of the King Super 20 alto saxophone. For decades, it has been a go-to instrument for professional jazz musicians, and it’s easy to see why. At Brass Foghorn, we’ve spent years restoring and testing saxophones, and the Super 20 always stands out for its unique sound and playability. Let’s dive into why this alto saxophone continues to capture the hearts of musicians.

A Sound That Stands Out

The King Super 20 alto saxophone has a tone that is rich, full, and versatile. Unlike some modern instruments that can sound bright but thin, the Super 20 delivers warmth and depth in every note. Jazz musicians love it because it can express a wide range of emotions, from soft and soulful to bold and punchy. This expressive range makes it perfect for solo performances or blending in with a full jazz band.

Built to Last

One reason the King Super 20 has remained popular is its exceptional build quality. When we restore these instruments at Brass Foghorn, we notice the precision in their construction. From the soldered keys to the perfectly leveled tone holes, every detail is made to last. This durability means musicians can rely on their Super 20 for years, and even decades, of performance without worrying about major repairs.

Playability That Feels Natural

Playing the Super 20 is a joy because of its smooth key action and ergonomic design. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned player, the keys feel responsive and comfortable under your fingers. The instrument also has excellent intonation, so notes ring true across the entire range. At Brass Foghorn, we always test each saxophone thoroughly to make sure it plays like new, and the Super 20 consistently meets that standard.

Restoration and Maintenance Matter

Even though the King Super 20 is a high-quality instrument, proper care is essential to keep it sounding its best. Using an alto saxophone cleaning kit regularly can prevent buildup of dirt and moisture, which can affect the sound and longevity of the saxophone. Simple maintenance routines, like cleaning the mouthpiece, wiping down the body, and replacing worn pads, make a huge difference.

Why Jazz Musicians Keep Coming Back

Many jazz legends have chosen the King Super 20 for its tone, reliability, and feel. From its expressive vibrato to its dynamic range, it allows musicians to play with emotion and precision. Musicians also appreciate how the Super 20 responds to different styles, whether it’s smooth ballads or fast bebop lines. It’s no wonder this saxophone has remained a favorite for generations.

A Personal Touch from Brass Foghorn

At Brass Foghorn, we don’t just sell saxophones; we carefully restore each instrument to make sure it plays like new. Our motto is simple: if it doesn’t play as new, we won’t sell it. That means when you pick up a saxophone alto king super 20 from us, you’re getting an instrument that’s ready to shine, whether you’re practicing at home, performing on stage, or recording in a studio.

In Closing:

At Brass Foghorn, we make sure every saxophone we offer meets these high standards. If you’re in Newport, Oregon, come by and test drive a Super 20 or explore our expertly restored collection.
Book your appointment today and experience the joy of playing a truly exceptional instrument.

FAQs

Why is the King Super 20 alto saxophone so popular in jazz?

Its warm tone, smooth key action, and expressive range make it ideal for jazz, allowing musicians to play with emotion.

How does the King Super 20 compare to other alto saxophones?

It offers richer sound, durable construction, and responsive playability, making it a favorite among professionals and serious jazz enthusiasts.

What maintenance does a King Super 20 alto saxophone need?

Regular cleaning with an alto saxophone cleaning kit, pad checks, and minor adjustments keep it performing like new.

Can beginners play a King Super 20 alto saxophone?

Yes, its ergonomic design and smooth key action make it accessible, though beginners may need guidance for proper technique.

Why should I buy a restored King Super 20 from Brass Foghorn?

Brass Foghorn repairs about 100 saxophone each year. The majority of the damage we see to saxophones is not from dropping or bumping the horn but from neglect. Failing to clean the horn after each use will lead to pad deterioration, metal corrosion and playability issues. We get it, after a long night of playing, we just want to hurry home and go to bed. putting the sax in a case without drying the sax first is a recipe for disaster. Every sax we sell comes with a free cleaning and care kit. It takes literally under 2 minutes to clean your saxophone (this is the minimum maintenance, more is always better). With this free cleaning kit, there is no excuse to put your horn away wet.
This is an F.E.Olds Parisian Ambassador tenor sax. It was made in Paris well over 50 years ago. It is raw brass, no lacquer and has an amazing vintage horn patina. The keys are made of solid nickel, most horns use brass keys that have been nickel plated. The nickel plating wears off with extended use. Also, they can’t be buffed or polished, again it will wear off the plating leaving the brass showing through. This horn’s keys, being solid nickel, can be buffed. We are polishing keys on this horn now. Many hours will go into this process, but the keys will look like new!

We are very excited about this saxophone. The patina is amazing, the keys will look like new and it is receiving a complete overhaul, so it will play as a new horn. New pads, corks, felts, etc. and setup to be gig ready. Watch for it in the coming weeks.
